Rumors of My Demise

The Ancestral Realm still tends to look a little strange to me, mainly because it seldom looks the same way twice. One of the perks of this realm is the ability to determine your surroundings and it seems like my family, especially, likes to change things on the regular.

You wouldn't know it, but the inhabitants of this realm include more than just my family. Families are grouped in communities, and folks from different communities can visit each other if they choose. Some of my ancestors have mentioned meeting their neighbors. I’ve never been outside of my family’s community, so I’m not sure what it looks like beyond here, but I’m guessing the other inhabitants probably like to switch it up as much as my people do. After Grandma Max’s revelation, I’m starting to understand how eternity can get boring after a while.

Not everyone chooses to spend all, a part, or even any of eternity here. In fact, some opt against eternity right off the bat. In that case, they may choose to return to Earth immediately, which was what Grandma Max was thinking about when she told me she was considering reincarnation. Others choose to disperse their energy in different ways. One of my ancestors told me recently that a neighbor of hers returned to Earth after roughly 600 years here. They still feel they gather their thoughts best when they are closest to the sky. They have given up on the white dresses, however, in favor of jeans and a brown t-shirt that says CHOCOLATE.

“Yes, Ma Dear.” They scramble over to the trellis and make their way down.

Ma Dear’s cottage in the Ancestral Realm is designed to look like the place they’d lived in when Daddy and Uncle Zach were teenagers. The only difference is they added a training room in the basement and an obstacle course in the backyard.

“Good.” Dearest dusts off their jeans and squints at me. It’s night in my realm, but it’s daytime here and the sun is shining directly into their eyes. “We’re going to continue working through the ways different types of matter can feel and then we’ll get to moving it around.”

I spend the first part of the night focusing on feeling the things that I’d become accustomed to ignoring. By the time I’m done, I’m quite good at discerning the differences in the ways the many things that flow over my skin daily feel. It was an interesting sensation — being able to tell dust from skin cells from atoms just from the impact was a revelation. It was like those images that
